Our pack lives in a small pine woods, just outside Vassieux-en-Vercors. Each dog has its own shelter which protects it from the winter cold and damp but also from the intense summer heat. The pack of 40 dogs is made up of two breeds: Siberian huskies and Alaskan huskies. Siberian husky : this is the dog of the Tchoukchtes, a tribe of Siberian nomads. The dogs were imported into Alaska at the beginning of the 20th century to pull sleds. These magnificent runners, with their thick fur, are supremely adapted to cold climates, able to survive temperatures of as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius. Siberian huskies can endure extreme conditions, are very independent, and have an excellent hunting instinct. While the Siberian husky will always be somewhat wild, it is also an agreeable companion. Alaskan husky : also called the Indian Dog. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Siberian husky was crossbred by Alaskan mushers with native dogs and various other working dogs. Over the years, the Alaskan husky has evolued into the best performing sled dog, and now forms the largest population of harnessed dogs in the world. Unlike Siberian huskies, an Alaskan husky has no standard morphology, and its appearance can vary from dog to dog. When the dogs aren't working, we feed them six times a week. The seventh day is reserved for fasting, to purify their systems and thus conserve the dogs' excellent health. In winter, when it's cold and the dogs are working, we feed them every day, and sometimes even twice a day on long treks. Since there is no direct source of water near the kennel, we bring the dogs fresh water daily.
